Karen B. Shaer
Senior Executive Vice President & General Counsel
Karen B. Shaer brings to client engagements an insider's experience with the corporate Chapter 11 and class action processes, as well as litigation knowledge from a distinguished legal career. Karen B. Shaer joined GCG in September 2001 as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of the company's newly formed Business Reorganization division. Ms. Shaer assumed the additional role of General Counsel in April 2003. In September 2006, Ms. Shaer was named Executive Vice President and General Counsel. In November 2011, Ms. Shaer was promoted to Senior Executive Vice President, while retaining her General Counsel title and position. During the past two years, Ms. Shaer was also responsible for overseeing GCG’s work on the $ 20 billion Gulf Coast Claims Facility. Her accomplishments as an attorney, combined with her class action and Chapter 11 reorganization management skills, have contributed to the successful expansion of GCG's services.
As General Counsel at American Family Enterprises, a subsidiary of Time, Inc., Ms. Shaer was an advisor to the CEO/President and the Board of Directors. During her tenure at the company, among other duties, she managed a Chapter 11 reorganization as well as all litigation and alternative dispute resolutions, encompassing defense of multi-state Attorneys General actions and more than 60 major state and federal individual and class actions.
Prior to joining American Family Enterprises in 1998, she served with the U. S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of New York where her positions included Deputy Chief, Criminal Division and Assistant United States Attorney. Earlier in her career she was a litigator involved in a wide range of civil litigation with the firms of Lankler Siffert & Wohl and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Yale University, she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar at Columbia Law School where she earned her J.D. In addition to her responsibilities at GCG, Ms. Shaer is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the New York City Bar Association. |
